Work and Family Consumer Science
Program Overview
- Work and Family Life courses are offered as a single period class, five days a week in the middle school, either as a semester or full-year course. The scope and depth of the course depends in large part on the length of the course.
- The curriculum of the course includes the process competencies of problem solving, interpersonal relationships, personal management and leadership.
- Topics of the core course areas are: Careers, Community and Family Connections, Consumer and Family Resources, Family, Interpersonal Relationships, Nutrition and Wellness and Parenting. Seventh and Eighth grade classes will include competencies from three of the core areas.
- The program includes the introduction of the Individual Career Plan, Service Learning Projects, and Culminating Course Projects.
- Work and Family Life courses also support the academic standards by applying concepts through real-life situations.
Population to be Served
- Open to all students.
- Educationally or physically disadvantaged students are mainstreamed unless disability prevents a student from benefiting from the program or creates a significant safety hazard to self or others.
Housing of the Program
- Is taught in classroom and laboratory in local middle school facilities that meet minimum state standards.
Student Leadership
- Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) provides leadership and citizenship opportunities at local, regional, state and national levels including participation in contests.
- Encourages students' participation in FCCLA as an integral part of the in-school instructional program.
Occupations Addressed by the Program
- Provides orientation to the world of work through career awareness activities.
- Introduces students to job application and interview skills.
